Three Things

  1. I read a lot of the old Captain America comics growing up. Working in a butcher shop in Waverly, Iowa will do that to you. When I was sixteen my parents died in a car accident, mostly because of my father’s drunk driving. My brother and I joked about running away and joining the circus, but I filed for emancipation, got custody of Barney, and started managing my father’s shop.
  2. I’ve always loved archery, despite it being a weapon from the Paleolithic era. Paleolithic. I looked it up. Our neighborhood sucked. You don’t normally think of Iowa as a hotbed for criminal activity but there was a lot of petty crime. Roberies, vandalizm, loitering. You know, the big stuff. What was I suppose to do? Like I said, I read a lot of Captain America comics.
  3. It was a long road getting to S.H.I.E.L.D., one that started with the best intentions, brought out the worst in me, and eventually saved me. Lets just say the cops weren’t as impressed with the “Golden Archer” as I was. My antics got someone’s attention though and I ended up Robin Hooding around the world with the Natasha. When she decided to flip-sides on the KGB she took me with her. I get the impression that S.H.I.E.L.D. didn’t really want me, they wanted Russia’s Black Widow. I was just happy to be part of something that Cap started… But you know what, their not that different from what Widow and I were doing.

Black blood red sky
And a belly all full of fire
Why I ask why
I don’t know, I grow so tired
Of the battle of wrong and right
That’s waged inside
Every time you speak your mind
We’re the same damn kind
Or don’t you know

With the devil’s eyes and a dagger tongue
You fill the sky above us with the sound
Of fatal words like fire flung
From a careless bow
I grow so tired
Of the battle of wrong and right
That’s waged inside
Every time you speak your mind
We’re the same damn kind
Or don’t you know

We all walk down to the hill
Where the gallows are swinging still
Nooses still clenched tight
‘Round the necks of 10 million ghosts
They whisper don’t forget us
But don’t forget to keep moving on
We’re the same damn kind
Or don’t you know

Black blood red sky
And belly all full of fire
Why I ask why
I don’t know, I grow so tired
Of the battle of wrong and right
That’s waged inside
Every time you speak your mind
